Why are Indians getting paid less

0 votes

I've been hunting for a job from quite some time now. Call me choosy but I will not settle for underpaying jobs. I am currently living in India and would like to settle here. I've done a lot of research in this process. One thing that I've noticed is, the exact same job profile pays much lesser or comes with fewer benefits in India. My question is why?

Hahaha who doesn't like cheap labor?
This is so true, I am going through the same process right now and it is frustrating, contrary to what others have said that accounting for the cost of living, Indian salaries are comparable to the west, they are not! For example, let us take Mumbai and New York. The job that I do, pays me only around 4LPA (this is my first job) here in Mumbai. The same job, in the same company, pays 70K USD in New York. The cost of living in New York is four times that of Mumbai (a quick google search) according to that, I should be paid around 17.5K USD in India, which is around 12.81LPA. Cost of living is less in India, true, but not as less as these corporates think it is.

Your best bet would be to gain as many skills as possible, that are relevant and get a remote job. You get to work from where ever you want, and usually, get paid according to US payscale. I will be following this route soon. This was not only do you get paid very well, you work from the comfort of your home, or could even consider becoming a digital nomad!

This is because the population of India is so huge that there is a lot of unemployment in the nation. People are ready to start off with whatever little they get and later will struggle to climb the appraisal ladder.

Indian's are highly skilled professionals but due to lack of resources and support they usually land up in an underpaying job.

HI dear one,

Some thing is better than Nothing. I really don't know where you are working or what technology you are working. Some startup companies are always giving low package. But you people don't forget that you are learning something from them. Just Try to learn fast then switchover from there. Trust yourself. Don't depend others. Be unique. One day will come. Then you can get good package. You people have to wait for that. My humble request that get a job with high or low package. It doesn't a matter. Just learn as early as possible. Then surely you will get good job in India or anywhere.

for ex: I was joined before one year with very low package in IT company where i working now. when i started my career i was looked like zero. But i taken 7 months only to prove my knowledge. I proudly say that i'm hero of cloud architech and devops in my office. I learned lot as well learning lot.Now i working with more than 25 servers and working with 13 projects as single-handedly.
" why i'm saying this because last week i have applied a resignation letter to office due to low package as well need to re-build family. But my office management not ready to accept this. Now they saying to give hike more than 150% from what i'm getting now. Now only i realized myself and work contribution."

so trust yourself. start whatever you want. love it. you can win. Don't go down.

There are 2 main reasons for this:

  1. Demand and Supply
  2. Cost of living

The first thing is there are few job vacancies and more people eligible for that job. This gives the industry leverage to hire people at less salary. Because a lot of people would rather work for less salary than stay jobless.

The second reason is the cost of living. The cost of living in India is less than in western developed countries. You can not expect to work here and get the salary of that country. The countries with a higher cost of living pay more but when you compare the salary in those countries and the salary in India keeping in mind the cost of living, you'd realize that there is not much difference.

And to add another point Many MNC these days are bothered about quantity than quality of people while hiring. So the pay is less because a lot of people would rather work for less salary than stay jobless.

Hey @Mahi, in my opinion Indians are getting paid less because India has a very weak economy and very large population. So people don't care much about the salary as there are shortages of jobs, they think mainly about getting a good job. Getting a job is first priority here and many people don't really care about getting paid less when compared to other countries.

Even companies don't offer good hikes to their employees as they know even if an existing employee resign, they have hundreds of other candidates who are willing to work for same role and also at lesser salary. So this is sad, but it's the harsh reality of industries.
