Data science is a huge topic consisting of many job descriptions and there are a few roles like data analysts that only require learning of few tools and small amount of basic programming which can be learnt at any time and having analytical skills. You can definitely go for one of those.

Yes, it is possible for a student with any background to get into Data Science after acquiring the right skills. Data Science is a huge domain and requires a lot of basic knowledge to get a job in it. Start by learning Programming. Programming is very important for Data Science. There are many resources available online to learn programming. Start with C language and after getting good basic knowledge, learn other languages. Python and R language are two very important programming for Data Science. Then learn concepts of Big Data Hadoop, Data Analytics, Data Science etc. These basics are enough to get a job as a fresher in Data Science.

You can shift to Data Science even if you are from a completely different background. But before applying for jobs or attending interviews, prepare yourself for the following skills:

  • Programming (Python, Java, Php, R)
  • Knowledge of Database systems and Architecture
  • Big Data Concepts
  • Basics of Hadoop Eco-System

Yes for sure you can Enroll for Data Science Course after Completion of Your Mechanical engineering Degree as Data Science does not required much basic which a mechanical student will not be familiar with. Data Science required Mathematics concept like linear algebra , Calculus which i hope you are pretty good on it. apart from that some skills on Statistics are required which should not be a huge problem for you and it also required some programming concept. Even students with arts background could do well on Data Science who don't have any Mathematics basic before Pursuing the Course for Data Science. So i think Data Science will be one of the best option for you to pursue your career as the demand and scope is high and is expected to rise each years.
