An important component of the Hadoop Ecosystem is HDFS. The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is a distributed file system designed to run on hardware based on open standards or what is called commodity hardware. This means the system is capable of running different operating systems(OS) such as Windows or Linux without requiring special drivers.

You can think of commodity hardware as computer hardware that is affordable and easy to obtain.

Commodity hardware, sometimes known as off-the-shelf hardware, is a computer device or IT component that is relatively inexpensive, widely available and basically interchangeable with other hardware of its type. Generally, commodity hardware can evolve from any technologically mature product. It refers to cheap, standardized servers that are easy to buy off the shelf from any vendor. Here's a typical example of a 2u, 2CPU commodity hardware server: Supermicro SYS-1028R-TDW 1U rack server. Two Xeon E5-2600 v3 CPU sockets. You can even check out the details of Big Data with the DP 203 Certification.
