For example, a contract needs to be written on betting at a cricket match, how could I connect to a third party application that hosts data and use that to write my smart contract?

You cant access/embed real world data using blockchains directly. For this, you have to make use of Oracles. Oracles are third party services that help you access real world data and include them in your smart contract.. You can go through https://gnosis.pm/ to know more..

Yes, you can connect a real world data in a smart contract. The smart contract can not do it by itself, you need make use third-party service of Oracle. Oraclize is the leading oracle service for smart contracts and blockchain applications, serving thousands of requests every day on Ethereum, Bitcoin and Rootstock.
