Why is geth --fast faster in downloading the Blockchain

0 votes
In a blog, I read that the --fast flag will increase the download speed of Blockchain. I tried it, and it in fact was faster. My question is, why is it faster compared to the normal method (downloading without --fast flag)?

When you use the --fast flag to download the Blockchain, it downloads the state rather than downloading the full block data. This reduces the size of your blockchain dramatically and results in faster download.
