How to choose the perfect career for yourself

0 votes
I have worked in the sales for a year, then moved to the cloud, working as a cloud engineer from the past 3 months. But I've realized I don't like this at all and this isn't working out for me. I want to experiment with other domains. How do I know what is right for me?

What's your idea of a "perfect career". This is pretty much subjective and varies from person to person!

Hey @Abheesh, it's completely alright to be confused with what you like and what career path is yours to excel. You are not alone in this, there are stats that prove that approximately 75% of the working population is confused with what they want to achieve in life. So believe when I say it's okay to be confused.

The best way is to actually experience different fields but this will lead you to another problem, How long will you keep experimenting? Because after your studies(undergrad and post-grad) you do not have much until you are under the pressure of settling down.

I recently heard a TED talk by Ashley Stahl, I learned a couple of things.

Firstly ask you yourself three questions:

  1. What am I good at? (Pick up your passion and try to build a career around it)
  2. What do people tell me I am good at? (outsiders have a very different unbiased opinion on your strengths, always take those into consideration)
  3. What's holding me back? (If you know your strength and if you know what you love, take risks, take initiatives and start building that road.)

@Kalgi, I completely agree with you. The best way is to actually experience different fields to find which one you will find interesting and like. But don't waste your time too much exploring different career options.

Forget about your degree & achievement. Do rigorous research on what type of job you would be comfortable with. Try joining a small firm for a few months and understand what is going on. If you are not enjoying your work, then that job isn't meant for you. Try other options too. There is no harm in getting multiple experiences. In fact, it adds to your skills.

Hope this helps.

There is no "perfect career", you pick the career/domain and make it perfect for you. Now the question is, how do you know which career is the best for you? Research. Take out time on a weekend or whenever you are free. Take a book and a pen and start googling information. Look at different domains, list them down. Mention why you like that particular domain and why you dislike it. After you've done this for all the domains, look at what you've written and start filtering the domains based on it. By the end of this, you will find the career you are most interested in. And if you are interested in it, that is best for you.
