How Bitcoin wallet find unspent transaction output(UTXOs)?

Does bitcoin wallet applications behave has SPV nodes? How does the wallet find the user's UTXOs while creating a new transaction??

The wallet apps are connected to the bitcoin network via SPV nodes using bloom filter to retrieve the UTXOs. Read more about that here https://bitcoin.org/en/developer-guide#bloom-filters
