How to use data compression in sqoop import

I am importing data from a database table to transfer to HDFS. I want the data that is being transferred to be compressed. How do I compress the data?

You can enable data compression from the command line itself. All you have to do is send the compress switch to your sqoop import command. Try this:

$ sqoop import <switches> --compress
