How feasible is it to use one way cryptographic hash function

I have a question in mind, Suppose I use a document as an input to the hashing function, what do you think could be done with the output hash? I mean how is the output hash put to use??

you can use the ouput hash function to check for the authenticity of the document by comparing the hashes of the outputs.
