How many is too many columns safely in Excel

I'm creating an Excel 2010 file with 400 to 500 columns of potential data. Would a high number of such columns be unstable?

I'll just share a story with you. Excel 2010 will not even attempt to load files larger than 80 MB. Remember that Excel 2010 saves files in OpenXML by default, but if your speedsheet contains too many formulas, MS advises that you save the file as an Excel Binary Workbook (.xlsb). Check the file's size in light of the number of columns; if it's little, there shouldn't be any issues.
