Excel change the spreadsheets from templates to workbooks

My Excel (2003) sheets are saved in ".xlt" format. How do you convert spreadsheets from templates to workbooks at this point?

Can somebody further explain what an Excel workbook and an Excel template are? Differences?

A workbook has numerous worksheets, right?

The extension is the only distinction between templates and workbooks. The.xlt file will transform from a template to a workbook if you rename it to.xls.

The.xlt file's default action is to open a copy of itself as a new file, which is the only practical change.
