I want to switch career from testing to cyber security. What exactly does cyber security mean? Does it mean IT security? or is it similar to the Admin team of a IT company that has to manage the firewall and stuff? Is it more than this?

Cybersecurity refers to the practice of protecting computer systems, networks, devices, and data from digital attacks, unauthorized access, or damage. It encompasses a range of technologies, processes, and practices designed to secure networks, hardware, software, and data from cyber threats. This field is increasingly important in an era of rapidly evolving cyber threats and growing reliance on digital systems for personal, corporate, and government operations.

Key aspects of cybersecurity include:

  1. Information Security: Protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data. This includes measures to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information and ensuring data is not altered or destroyed.

  2. Network Security: Safeguarding computer networks from intruders, whether targeted attackers or opportunistic malware.

  3. Application Security: Ensuring that software and applications are free from vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers.

  4. Operational Security: Involves the processes and decisions for handling and protecting data assets. This includes determining who has authorization to access information and setting up controls to monitor this access.

  5. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity: Planning how an organization will respond to a cyber-attack or any other event that causes the loss of operations or data. Disaster recovery policies dictate how the organization restores its operations and information to return to the same operating capacity as before the event.

  6. End-User Education: Recognizing that cyber threats can also arise from within an organization due to human error, end-user education is about teaching users to follow good security practices, like not clicking on unknown links or downloading suspicious attachments in emails.

  7. Physical Security: Ensuring physical access to network components (like servers and hardware) is securely managed and monitored.

With the proliferation of digital technologies and the internet in everyday life, the scope of cybersecurity is continuously expanding. It now includes areas like mobile computing, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT). Cybersecurity is critical for individuals, businesses, and governments as cyber attacks can lead to financial loss, theft of sensitive data, and damage to an organization's reputation.
