Amazon EBS provides the four current generation volume types that are most commonly used and they are divided into two major categories:

1. SSD-backed storage that are used for transactional workloads

2. HDD-backed storage that is used to achieve throughput for intensive workloads.

These are the volume types that differ in performance characteristics and also price, allowing the user to tailor their storage performance and also cost to the needs of your workload.
