Unable to instantiate org apache hadoop hive

I getting the following error when I run any hive shell command. It's not just for a single command, it's for every command. Help me solve this:

Error in metadata: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to instantiate org.apache.hadoop.hive.metastore.HiveMetaStoreClient FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.DDLTask

You might not have set the connector. If you're using MySQL to hold your metadata db, you wll need to copy mysql-connector-java-x.x.x-bin.jar into $HIVE_HOME/lib.
