Reading an Excel file in PHP

I'm attempting to read an Excel document (Office 2003). It is necessary to upload an Excel file and parse its information.

I can only locate information on the following related (yet insufficient) topics when I use Google: creating Excel files, reading Excel XML files, reading Excel CSV files, or abandoned unfinished projects. Office 2003 files are readily available to me because I possess it. It is set up on my machine, but it cannot and will not be set up on my shared host.
