I'm not too sure about the functionality...I don't think the documentation has also been released as yet. There is certainly a big hype surrounding this update because apparently Selenium IDE is getting back from resurrection :)
And with that a plenty more changes are expected.
Now getting back to your question, as per what your saying, I don't think there will be a need to use browser drivers (even Gecko). If Selenium can directly talk and does not need an object instance, then it will be one step less for us (which is happy news). Anyway, let's wait for the update.
