What is the difference between the project manager and project leader on PMP application?

Is a project leader part of the project team but leading a certain area?

Project Manager and Project Leader could be a designation or role.

Some companies have a Project Leader designation while others do not have.

PMI defines Project Manager as a role but does not define Project Leader. For PMP, you need to have 4500 hours of PM (role) experience.
