Can we run selenium tests (Firefox) on WebDriver without a GUI?

We are planning to upgrade our prod server from Ubuntu-desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu-server 12.04. There are various services running on our current desktop OS such as Selenium WebDriver. My doubt is, can WebDriver be run from a cli-based system?

My gut feeling is that it can't, as it relies on a GUI. Am I right or wrong?

You can explore options like HTMLUnit Driver or Ghost Driver. HTMLUnit Driver works for testing on web servers where there is no question of a GUI. This is what you might be interested in.

If this does not work, you can also check how Ghost Driver or PhanthomJS Driver work. I have not tried them personally, but I've heard they do something similar.

Hi Shubham, you can use headless browsers like Headless chrome browser using these lines of code;

System.setProperty("webdriver.chrome.driver","ChromeDriverPath");
ChromeOptions options = new ChromeOptions();
options.addArguments("headless");
WebDriver driver = new ChromeDriver(options);
driver.get("https://www.google.co.in/");
System.out.println("title is: " + driver.getTitle());
