what is pom in selenium

I am not able to resolve the null pointer exception issue when a page returns an object of other page. Can anyone please tell what is the exact way of doing it. As explained in the above link, it's not clear how the error is resolved.

Page Object Model, also known as POM, is a design pattern in Selenium that creates an object repository for storing all web elements. Each class file will contain only corresponding web page elements. Using these elements, testers can perform operations on the website under test.
