What is the meaning of cascading in CSS

What does the word "Cascading" in CSS actually mean? I'm hearing varying opinions, so I'm asking here. An illustration would be beneficial.

Cascading simply implies that it may be applied to numerous pages/documents, which CSS files ("sheets") excel at. The cascade algorithm specifies how user agents mix property values from several sources. It specifies which origin and layer take precedence when declarations in more than one origin or cascade layer specify a value for an element's property.
