Starting Shrewsoft from a bash script

Question

I frequently use the shrewsoft vpn client to connect to my corporate vpn. I'd want to write a bash script that will allow me to set up the vpn client as well as a few other environment variables with a single command. It works properly when I execute the command from the terminal. The identical command in a bash script, however, fails.
