Attaching multiple instance with same EBS Volume

Is it possible to attach multiple instance with same EBS Volume in AWS? If yes the how does it distinguishes between the part of volume used by individual instance?

Attaching multiple instances to one volume is not supported at this time by AWS, while you are given the liberty to be able to attach multiple volumes to a single instance.
