Who Is A Data Scientist?

A Data Scientist is a detective, just like Sherlock Holmes! The only difference is, Sherlock Holmes solves murder mysteries, whereas a Data Scientist solves Data mysteries, such as detecting trends and patterns, extracting useful insights, forming hypotheses and building predictive models in order to find a solution.

Here’s a definition of Data Scientist:

A Data Scientist is a professional who possesses the ability to view data through a quantitative lens. They’re responsible for finding solutions to problems in the Business, Finance, Healthcare, Tech, Agriculture and basically every other field out there.

To become a Data Scientist, you have to be an expert in technologies such as R, MatLab, SQL, Python, etc. You must possess a data-driven problem-solving approach, strong business acumen, and expertise in Statistics, Predictive modeling, Data manipulation, data wrangling, and visualization.

If you wish to learn more about the skills required to become a Data Scientist, you can go through this Data Scientist Skills – What Does It Take To Become A Data Scientist?  blog.

Now that you know who a Data Scientist is, let’s take a lot at some of the Data Scientist Job Trends in the market.

They always say that first impressions last forever so make it your best. It’s the same when it comes to building a resume. A resume creates your first impression in an interview, therefore make sure it stands out and gets you that job you’ve been chasing.

Here’s a sample resume that I created for the role of a Data Scientist:

Here’s a list of key points that will make your resume a perfect one:

  • Clear Career objective: State exactly what you’re applying for and where your interest lies.
  • Educational Qualification: This field includes your educational background such as Bachelorette Degree, Masters Degree (if any), etc. Since you’re applying for the role of a Data Scientist, it is preferable to have a computer science background.
  • Professional Experience: This field is specifically for individuals with work experience and not for freshers. Here you can mention your contributions to the company. For example, you can write about a Machine learning model that you created to solve a business problem and how it benefitted your organization.
  • Technical Skills: Technical skills are practical abilities acquired from working on real-time, complex projects. In this field, you must mention your programming skills, what tools you’re proficient with, such as SQL, Apache Spark, Hadoop, Tableau, etc. Your technical skills should prove your abilities to the hiring manager, so make sure you list down all the relevant details in this section.
  • Non-Technical Skills: A lot of us don’t pay attention to this field when we’re building a resume. Data Scientists don’t just deal with tools and machines, it is no longer a domain in which strong technical skills are all it takes to become a Data Scientist. You must have excellent communication skills, a strong intellect, analytical thinking and tons of creative ideas to build a successful Data Scientist career.

Now that you know the demand for a Data Scientist, I’m sure you’re curious to learn more. Here’s a blog on How To Learn Data Science? Do give it a read.
